Swimming pool Special Additonal Safety Checklist for Children under age of five

The Shaked Law Firm would like to provide the public with a special additional checklist for children under the age of five:  (note the following is adopted verbatim from the Consumer Products Safety Commission’s warning about pool hazards)

1.  Fences must be tall with four sides and an auto gate lock (child proof).

2. Alarms, if necessary.

3. No attractive nuisances.

4. Secured and locked pool steps and ladders.

5. Power safety cover.

A more detailed explanation for each safety checklist item is explained below:

1.  Fences must be tall with four sides and an auto gate lock (child proof). Fences and walls should be at least four feet high and installed completely around the pool.  Fence gates should be self-closing and self-latching.  The latch should beout of a child’s reach.  Keep furniture that could be used for climbing int othe pool area away from the fences.

2. Alarms, if necessary. If your house forms one side of the barrier to the pool, then doors leading from the house to the pool should be protected with alarms that produce  sound when a door is unexpectedly opened.

3. No attractive nuisances.  Do not leave pool toys or floats in the pool or pool area that may attract the young children to water.

4. Secured and locked pool steps and ladders.  For aboveground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured and locked or removed when the pool is not in use.

5. Power safety cover.  Although not mandatory, the CPSC did recommend a power safety cover, which is motorized power barrier that can be placed above the water area and be used when the pool is not in use.
